Favre and the Jets

So Brett Favre is no longer a Packer. Incredibly shocking. After a storied career, he will be suiting up in another shade of green. For me, it's sad to see him go. This is one of those sports events that will be the one that defines this generation, just as the trade that sent Wayne Gretzky to Los Angeles. Will this trade reap the same results for the Jets? I'm sure they hope so, but I don't think it will be likely.
The hardest thing for me to come to grips with is the fact that he went to New York. I understand that from the Packers' upper management, this is a perfect place, since they are 1) out of division, 2) out of the conference, and 3) will not be visiting Lambeau until something like 2014. If Brett is still playing by then (and hasn't won a Super Bowl), I will be incredibly amazed. But I think there are so many more viable options in the NFL for Brett to actually have a respectable career with. A person like Brett will do amazing things for a team, and there are some that with just a little bit more experience and proficiency in the pocket could be major threats in January. Both the Bears and Vikings would be contenders this year with Brett under center, but trading him in the NFC North would be the stupidest thing the Packers would have done after trading Brett Favre, the face of the franchise.
Personally, I would have preferred to see him stay in the NFC. I think the ideal place for him to go would be San Francisco, surprisingly enough. They might not have a whole lot of star power, but they have made some moves in the offseason that could really pay off, especially if Brett was on the roster. They don't have superstar receivers, but with people like Isaac Bruce, Ashley Lelie, and even Vernon Davis as targets, the 49ers could be seeing the end zone a lot more than they have in the years since Steve Young was at the helm. Frank Gore and Deshaun Foster in the backfield would operate very much like Ryan Grant, or even going back to better days of the Green Bay backfield... Ahman Green or Dorsey Levens. Especially in a division like the NFC West, San Fran would have a great chance of winning and getting in the playoffs.
Atlanta would be a nice fit, but there are so many problems there it would be better just to let them worry about rebuilding and forgetting about that guy who used to be quarterback. What was his name again?
But in the AFC, teams like Kansas City, Buffalo, and Baltimore would be great fits for Brett. The first two have great receiving options (can anybody say Tony Gonzalez?) and are places very much like Green Bay in those winter months, where he has shown such dominance. Baltimore has shown that they can get it done on defense (last year was an aberration), and when the offense is clicking, they can move the ball. Having Willis McGahee in the backfield would take a lot of pressure off the passing game. Additionally, they have a bunch of young quarterbacks that could use the opportunity to learn from such a legend and actually improve. But get rid of Kyle Boller first.
That's all from me. Have a great day everybody.
